Raine

The slaughter is exactly how I pictured it would be.

The monsters, those beasts that come from a combination of fae and spawn, crush the Angelics with ease. The flying gang can’t compete with the claws and fangs bred into monsters that come from the darkest part of The Meld.

Spawn should technically be called ethereal. Like the royal angels and demons of the ethereal, spawn come from the thinnest plane, where both angels and demons have fought for millennia.

But when The Meld happened, everyone got smushed together here.

The highest tiers of angels and demons decided to band together and push their lower cousins away, into their own classification. So the smaller devils, demons, and tricksters keep to themselves, becoming more bloodthirsty.

And hungry. So hungry. Spawn lust all the time. In doing so, they created a new breed after The Meld—the monster.

Vampires, werewolves, lamia, harpies, ogres, all come from fae and spawn combined. The less human-looking, the stronger the beast. Except for the vampires, who are so coldly beautiful in order to attract prey.

Like the one I have my eye on outside the window. He’s fascinating to watch. He looks human, though his fingers end in sharp claws that appear and disappear at will. He hasn’t bitten anyone that I can see, but I’m sure he has fangs.

Yet it’s his shaggy dark hair waving around a face that looks made of marble, carved from the fantasies of innocence, that shocks me. He’s beautiful, a pretty person no matter what one might prefer in terms of a partner.

His skin is pale, of course, but that makes his red lips even redder, his dark eyes like black holes that shine with intelligence, flashing with red.

The other monsters follow his lead, obeying his commands, and before I know it, the Angelics are beaten back while this monster smiles with victory.

He isn’t merciful. And neither are his companions.

He rips off the wings of the leading Angelic then tears his throat out.

Around him, other monsters follow suit.

A few Angelics on the run fire back arrows and yell threats, but the vampire does nothing but dodge danger and laugh.

His voice is deep, throaty.

Seductive.

I tuck closer into the shadows, peering through the window, careful not to be seen.

The vampire looks all around him and motions to a fae to come closer.

The fae has sandy-colored short hair and doesn’t appear afraid. He must be part of the monster’s gang.

That the monsters are here, in Paradise, still makes me uneasy. They so easily slaughtered our people in Well-Tremonton. So brutal in their punishments, tearing people apart.

As they’ve done here.

I force myself to pay attention but don’t recognize any of my family’s enemy in these particular monsters. Not the same group who decimated my beloved mother, aunt, and uncle.

I guess I can rest easy that I don’t need to kill this group.

Yet.

They are working for Ulrich Landry, so they will always be a threat.

I close my eyes and concentrate. I obviously feel undeath walking about in the street with so many vampires present.
